Herpes: Female Symptoms
There are two strains of the female herpes virus: female herpes simplex type one and female herpes simplex type two. The strain of the virus that is responsible for oral herpes and the strain associated with cold sores is female herpes simplex type one. The second strain, female herpes simplex type two is the virus which causes genital herpes.
Female herpes can be the cause of a variety of symptoms and signs. Some symptoms and indications of female herpes are very noticeable and easily recognized. Other symptoms can be very subtle and difficult to discern. The symptoms of female herpes type one and female herpes type two are diverse and vary greatly between individuals. These symptoms are frequently confused with other commonplace ailments. Furthermore, female herpes may have no indications or symptoms at all, known as a silent infection. Most people infected with female herpes have very mild symptoms and may not even be aware that they are carrying the disease for many years.
While many people carrying the female herpes type two virus may not experience discernible symptoms, the initial outbreak is typically the most significant and the indications can be very pronounced. Usually, within approximately two weeks after the virus is transmitted the initial outbreak will occur. Symptoms and sores caused by the initial outbreak usually heal within a period of two to four weeks. The other symptoms typically associated with the original outbreak are a second series of sores as well as fever or flu-like symptoms. Swollen glands may also be present during the initial outbreak. However, individuals infected with female herpes type two may never experience cold sores or may have such mild signs that they are not noticeable or are mistaken for acne, insect bites, or another skin condition. Patients who experience such mild initial symptoms may not realize that they have been infected with female herpes type two until years after the actual first appearance of symptoms treatment for herpes.
Typically, those infected with female herpes type two can expect to experience between four and five recurrences of these symptoms within the period of one year. It is possible that over time these recurrences may decrease in frequency, but these factors vary between individual patients.
The most common symptom of female herpes type two is a sensitivity and redness occurring around the vaginal area that eventually develops into blisters and sores. While these blisters typically develop around the genital area, they can at times also be present inside the vagina. Other common symptoms of female genital herpes type two are swollen lymph glands in the groin, muscle aches, lower back pain, fever, headache and vaginal discharge and discomfort or burning sensation during urination.
Typically, the incubation period from the time a woman contracts female genital herpes type two until the first symptoms become apparent is approximately three weeks. This varies between individuals. The initial warning sign that female herpes type two may be present is the development of blisters and pimple or wart like boils. These blisters are most commonly found around the vaginal area but can also infect the buttocks, thighs, and uterus.
These lesions and blisters are easily transmitted to other areas of the body by scratching and skin contact. The blisters are typically associated with a stabbing hot pain when touched and a burning sensation on the skin.
While these syptoms of herpes can be signs that female herpes type two is present, there are other methods available to properly diagnose the disease such as blood tests to detect antibodies. Female herpes type one and female herpes type two require different tests and carry different antibodies.
Because the symptoms of female herpes type one and female herpes type two are diverse and vary greatly amongst individuals, the best way to get an accurate diagnosis of suspected female herpes symptoms is to see a health care professional who can provide an accurate diagnosis based on an individual’s unique symptoms.
